 Fourth Birthday, Fortieth Birthday

And then you realize
that it is not forever
that it is not fair
that it is not
                a ride on a pony
                a birthday cake
                a romance.

And then you realize
that you are alone
that you will die
that your dreams are
whiffs
the spider’s last web.

And then you realize
that they lied to you
(not from guile but fear)
that you must find
what truth there is
for yourself.

And then you realize
that sound and sight
fury and malaise
are but one.

And then you realize
that you must create

                a ride on a pony
                a birthday cake
                romance.

        In the canebrake

        the tiger

        hot breath and lightning.

        Behind the door

        the woman

        cold breath

        and tears.

        At the handle

        the man

        breathing

        alone.                            1975

The Pattern Least Taken

That fifth bird from the end
            not quite in sequence
is mine to cherish.

The pinkish-orange sky
met solemnly by the rolling
gray-blue ocean crests,
frames all sight.

The matting of the hills
and horizon are transients
such as we, you and I.

The artists are the waves
            and that one lone bird.
